Chalk Talk: What is Distributed NFV?

Chalk Talk: What is Distributed NFV? As functions on the network move to a virtualized model -- called Network Functions Virtualization or NFV -- network operators must determine the need to either centralize or distribute these software-based functions.

In this Chalk Talk session, John Hawkins, Ciena’s resident Ethernet guru, explains the pro's and con's of Distributed Network Functions Virtualization, or D-NFV, versus a centralized model, as well as options for a hybrid NFV model. He explains how D-NFV works and the various components of a complete D-NFV solution, including Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs), a compute server, a Hypervisor, a virtual switch, a virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) and an orchestrator.

Ciena's D-NFV Infrastructure software, as well as our Blue Planet NFV orchestration, work together to provide a complete, open, and modular solution purpose-built for a distributed Virtual Network Functions (VNF) deployment environment.
