Cabinet Office minister Micheal Gove said today that we would be leaving the EU and all its ties on 1 January 2021.
Ministers have said repeatedly that we did not want to seek an extension of the transition period.
Technically Britain is out of the EU as of 31 January this year, but we are still tied to their rules until the end of 2020.
Britain had to say in June whether it wanted an extension - something which was written in law into the withdrawal agreement.
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove said today: “We have informed the EU today that we will not extend the Transition Period. The moment for extension has now passed."
It comes after the first ministers of Scotland and Wales wrote to Boris Johnson today to demand an extension.
Brexit talks have been going on throughout the year, trying to hammer out a trade deal.
But talks are still stuck on several issues - including access to fish, EU laws and so-called level playing field rules going forward.
