Imperative clauses - English grammar lesson In this English grammar lesson, you will learn all about the imperative.

What is the imperative and how do you use it?

An imperative usually does NOT have a subject. An imperative is a verb in the base form.

Common uses of the imperative are as follows:
Orders and instructions.
to encourage someone.
to suggest something.
to offer something.
to express wishes for someone's welfare.

We can also express first person imperatives with "let":

Singular: Let me + base form
Plural: Let us / let's + base form
