Amsterdam's residents shared their views in response to a court ruling which has stated that the authorities should immediately scrap its current COVID-19 curfew on Tuesday.
The court in The Hague ruled that the curfew, which came into effect on January 23, must be lifted as it violated the right to freedom of movement, siding with the group that brought the complaint court 'Virus Truth' (Viruswaarheid).
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has made a public appeal for residents to continue respecting the curfew, while his government has asked the court to suspend its ruling pending appeal. The decision to implement the curfew caused a series of protests and civil unrest in January and the past few week weeks.
Amsterdam resident Martine Blom commented in an interview that in her opinion, the winter weather made the curfew matter less to her: "I mean it's dark and it's cold. What do you have to do outside? I personally wouldn't be so concerned about it and just wait until March."
"Personally, I don't think that curfew makes any difference to the number of infections, so I am not against the abolition" added Blom.
In another interview with a local resident, the contrasting view that the curfew was a positive measure to help curb the COVID-19 incidence rate over a few weeks was shared: "If you are a doctor, I would understand. But we can just put everything on hold for three weeks, secure everything, and then it's done", said Henk.
According to the latest figures compiled on Tuesday by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the Netherlands have seen a total of 1,049,082 cases of COVID-19 with 15,049 related deaths.
The Dutch government introduced the curfew, as well as other measures in January, via emergency law arguing that the restrictions were necessary in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus, and thereby shield the country's healthcare system amid concerns over new strains of the virus.
