ECU Integrated Coastal Programs and the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) are hosting the annual Capstone research project presentation from the students of the UNC Institute for the Environment’s Outer Banks Field Site (OBXFS). The OBXFS is a semester-long, interdisciplinary residential learning experience for UNC Chapel Hill undergraduate students hosted by the ECU Outer Banks Campus. Each fall, students from the UNC Institute for the Environment spend a semester at the OBXFS where they take classes, engage in internships and complete a Capstone research project. The 2020 Capstone research presentation is focused on septic systems in a changing coastal landscape and will be given by the students of the 2020 Outer Banks Field Site. This year’s students concentrated their research on indicators of septic wastewater contamination in surface and groundwater and the associated awareness and risks perceived by property owners in the barrier island community of Nags Head, North Carolina. Their presentation, titled “What lies beneath: A socio-ecological case study of septic systems in Nags Head” will highlight their findings. The program will be streamed live at 2:00PM on Monday, November 23, 2020. The public is welcomed and encouraged to tune-in to the live broadcast.
Following the student presentation, the online viewing audience will be able to ask the student presenters questions via an online chat room. The written Capstone report will be accessible via the OBXFS website ( on the morning of November 23, 2020.
