Hey, I'm Annie - Halloween was my most anticipated occasion of the year. Back in middle school, I used to live in a small town. Every year there'd be a fun pumpkin patch with a scare maze, the local bakery gave out free cat and ghost-shaped cookies, and the whole neighborhood went decorating crazy, and made sure they had heaps of sweets for the trick or treaters.
My friends and I spent weeks planning our outfits and could dress up as anything we wanted, sometimes it was a skeleton, and sometimes it was Disney princesses in horror versions - it was such a great time.
But now, Halloween reminds me of a horrible memory.
My family moved to the city when I started high school - and the kids are completely different here. Everyone seems to care more about how they look, and life seems a lot flashier. I didn't fit into this new environment, my non-branded clothes, and messy hair made me pretty much invisible.
After a few weeks of feeling like a complete outsider I went home in tears – I told my parents that I didn't fit in and I wanted to go back to our old town and be with my old friends. My parents tried to convince me that the education system was very good here and I should try to adjust to my new life.

Mom had made a new friend who owned a beauty salon, so she decided it'd be a great idea for us both to spend the day being pampered.
My father drove me and my mother to the salon - they transformed my long, dull brown hair into a sleek, chestnut shoulder-length style. They applied fake tan so I had a natural-looking glow, waxed my bushy eyebrows, and showed me how to apply my makeup.
I looked in the mirror and saw a stranger looking back at me. I didn't look like a small-town girl anymore – I looked so glam!

Dad picked us up and took us to the mall. Mom helped me pick out some cute new outfits for school, then when my dad took out his wallet to pay for the bills, I saw the concerned look on his face - I knew that they'd burned A LOT of money today and I felt bad. Mom looked so happy though, she kept on complimenting my new look. I thought she was overdoing it, but still, it was nice not to be invisible.
