Montel Discusses COVID-19's Wide-Ranging Effects with Special Guests | The Balancing Act

Montel Discusses COVID-19's Wide-Ranging Effects with Special Guests | The Balancing Act In this special digital edition of The Balancing Act, Montel Williams talks to three special guests about the impact of COVID-19 and how we can all stay safe. Montel's guests include Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte and Direct Energy president Bruce Stewart.

But first, we welcome one of the world's leading neuroscientists, Dr. Babak Kateb, the founder and chairman of the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT). Dr. Kateb discusses COVID-19's possible effects on the brain, including loss of smell and hearing. But the COVID pandemic can lead to another pandemic -- a mental health pandemic. The loss of jobs and loss of security can trigger an increase in depression, suicides and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Kateb recommends meditation, eating a nutritious diet and exercising to maintain stable mental health. Dr. Kateb believes it's just a matter of time before new therapeutic drugs arrive to treat COVID-19, probably by the end of summer.

Next, Montel welcomes Bruce Stewart from Direct Energy, one of North America's largest energy providers. Direct Energy gives customers choice, simplicity, and innovation where energy, data, and technology meet. They make energy work harder for their over four million home and business customers across North America. Throughout this tough time, Bruce offers some tips for those hunkering down can save on energy costs, including turning off lights, unplugging unused appliances and game boxes, developing good energy conservation habits and time shifting appliance usage. Another tip? Make sure your big appliances are in good operating condition. Bruce also believes that helping customers gain access to sustainable "green" resources is the wave of the future. He also thinks that offering more digital options to customers is paramount, especially since unpredictable events that force customers to stay in their homes might occur in the future.

Finally, Montel's fellow cerebral palsy ambassador, actor RJ Mitte of Breaking Bad, joins the program to discuss their shared disease and how he's getting through the pandemic. Since cerebral palsy is a muscular disorder, those who suffer are more vulnerable to respiratory infections and viruses. Those who suffer from CP must be extra careful to avoid physical contact while the pandemic is raging. Mitte assures Montel that he's gloved up and fully sanitized -- in fact, he's only left the house once since the pandemic hit.

Thank you for joining us for this special digital edition of The Balancing Act, and until we get the all-clear, be safe and practice social distancing, everyone.
