People in Guayaquil, the centre of Ecuador's COVID-19 outbreak, have been camping outside hospitals for days waiting to hear news of their ill relatives as footage shot at Los Ceibos hospital on Wednesday shows.

As the outbreak of COVID-19 worsens in the city, many people have been camping outside the crowded hospitals anxiously waiting to hear news from their relatives.

"Altogether I have been here 21 days. So they told me my husband had coronavirus, that he was infected through dialysis done here at Los Ceibos Hospital. I think the assistance here is somewhat delayed because they only tell you when your relative is dead already," explained Mayra Montano outside Ceibos Hospital.

Footage shows several people outside the emergency wing where many have been camping in an improvised tent under reportedly in poor conditions as they wait to hear about the condition of their ill family members.

The severity of the pandemic in Guayaquil has overwhelmed hospitals and the health care system, with many patients having to wait for hours to be treated and sometimes die at home or hospital before even being seen.

According to the latest figures published by the Johns Hopkins University, Ecuador has registered more than 7,800 cases of coronavirus cases while several hundred have died from the disease.
